Biographical
Anna Montgomery emigrated with her family from Ireland when she was 5 (1913) to Richmond where she lived most of her life. Just before high school graduation she got a job with B.C. Tel as a telephone operator. She was probably employed there when she took the cruise to Alaska. Soon after, she married Pete Rolston and was fired from B.C. Tel. because married women were not allowed to work in the telephone office at that time. However, they rehired her the same day with the directive that she could work until she got pregnant. She was the first married woman to work for B.C. Tel.

Lesley Percival, daughter of Anna Montgomery Rolston, donated the items to Prince Rupert City and Regional Archives; they were subsequently transferred to the Alaska State Library (Acc. No. 1999-044).

Processing Information
The original photograph order was retained. Photographs were numbered and housed in mylar. Some of the photographs have scorched edges. According to the donor, “in 1942 my parents home burned to the ground. Fortunately the photos were saved, although damaged.” [letter from Lesley J. Percival, March 25, 2000]
