Biographical Note

Mr. Sherwood was born in Capitola, California in 1896 and graduated from Oregon Agriculture College (now Oregon State University) with a B.S. degree. He came to Juneau in 1940 from Eagle Rock, California with his wife, Gladys (Happy), two daughters and son. They purchased Mrs. Jensine Pederson’s dairy in the Mendenhall Valley and moved into the log and frame farmhouse.

Curtis Sherwood organized and helped incorporate the Glacier Highway Electric Association (GHEA) in Auke Bay and served as President for the first seven years. Later he served a short time as the temporary manager. A birdwatcher, he identified the first cowbirds in Alaska and occasionally collected specimen birds for the University of Alaska. He also studied predacious fungi of the sphagnum fields of Mendenhall Valley.

The Sherwoods left Juneau in 1964. The farm was taken by the Dept. of Roads when the Glacier Highway was constructed.
