Cyrus Kingsley Gates Postcard Collection, circa 1898-1920
Scope and Contents
Cyrus Kingsley Gates collected these postcards at age 15 on a trip to Alaska with his uncle, P. G. Gates, of Pasadena, California, during the summer of 1920. Dates of the photographs on the postcards range from 1898-1920. Photographers represented include J.E. Thwaites, Winter and Pond, Sydney Laurence, Logemann, Maude Dempsey, E.A. Hegg and Lowman and Hanford Co. publishers. Scenic landscapes, villages, towns, glaciers, totem poles, steamboats, roadhouses in Alaska and British Columbia.

Biographical Note
Cyrus Kingsley Gates was born (July 7, 1905) and raised in Bellingham, Washington, then educated at Oregon State University and Harvard Business School. He was stationed in England with the U.S. Army during World War II. As an adult, he resided in Seattle, Washington and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Gates never married. He had two sisters, Frances Gates McCord and Betty Gates Clark. He died December 23, 1995.

Acquisition
Bobbie S. Morris of Mercer Island, Washington, a second cousin of the collector donated the postcards in 1999 (Acc. No. 1999-34).
