Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a compilation, by Eric Knapp, of commemorative cover projects of the Anchorage Philatelic Society (actually, beginning with the Anchorage Stamp Club in 1941), updated through 2000.

The first four volumes of the cover collection consist of four volumes (in binders) containing 154 covers (1941 – 1997). Volume 1 (1999) of the Alaska Philatelic Cover Catalog, Anchorage Philatelic Society, contains photocopies of covers, 173 pages, in a binder. Volume 2 (2002) of the Alaska Philatelic Cover Catalog (Alaska Collectors Club, Gastineau Philatelic Society, and Northern Lights Stamp Club), contains photocopies of covers, 164 pages, in a binder.

The update to the cover collection consists of 14 covers (1998 – 2000).

Request for permission to publish material from the collection must be discussed with the Librarian. Photocopying does not constitute permission to publish.

Historical

Alaska’s oldest and largest stamp club, the Anchorage Philatelic Society has over 100 members and has been in continuous operation since 1950. The cover collection’s introduction in Volume 1 contains a detailed history of the Society and the goals of the collection. The introduction to the Cover Catalog, created by Eric R. Knapp, also contains an historical overview of the Society and information about the Cover Collection. The cover from 1941 originated with the Anchorage Stamp Club, active only during that year.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated by Eric Knapp of the Anchorage Philatelic Society. He donated the first four volumes of the cover collection in 1997, Volume 1 of the cover catalog in 1999, and the first update to the cover collection in 2000. Volume 2 of the cover catalog was added in 2002. More information on the donors and historic researchers involved in the Cover Collection is contained in the introduction in Volume 1.

Processing Information

The Cover Collection and update were housed by the donor in archival sleeves, with the original Cover Collection arranged chronologically in binders. The Cover Catalog is in its received condition, photocopied in a loose-leaf binder. The updates to the Cover Collection will be housed in acid-free folders if the donor does not provide additional binders.
