Rose Curtice Butts Collection, 1945-1982 (bulk 1945-1948)
Scope and Contents
The scrapbook depicts her teaching and contains photos of the Aleut children who were prisoners of war in Japan. Papers include correspondence, map, contracts, memorabilia, and an article from the Alaska Sportsman (May 1948) titled "Prisoners from Alaska." The Aleut children were: Serje Artamonoff, John Golodoff, and Angelina, Martha and Mariana Hodikoff. Photos include: Juneau, Sitka, Seward, Hope, Cooper's Landing, Eklutna, Fairbanks, Circle Hot Springs (aerial), Yukon River, and McKinley Park. The album also contains commercial photographs.

Biographical
Rose Curtice was born June 1, 1894 in Moravia, New York. She was a teacher with the Dept. of Interior, Indian Services Schools for two years: 1945-1946, at Eklutna and 1946-1947 at the Native school, Juneau. At the Eklutna Vocational School she taught five of the Aleut children who had been prisoners of war in Japan. The remainder of her 39 years of teaching was in Oakton, Virginia. She had two sons, Lee and William. Rose Curtice Butts died Dec. 20, 1982.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The photographs were donated in 2002 by Lenna L. and Harriet Curtice, San Diego CA. A second group of materials was received in Jan. 2003.
Processing Information
Loose photos were housed in Mylar. Scrapbook is retained as received although photo corners were added as needed. Fragile documents were housed in Mylar.
