Biographical Note
At the time this letter was written, April 1925, Casper Malmberg, had helped build the Eklutna Industrial School for Native Children, where orphaned children were schooled. His wife was a teacher at the school.
Horse Creek Mary was born at Tarral, Alaska. Her father was a Russian trader. Her mother was a native of the Copper River Valley. Mary lived on Horse Creek most of her life and died in Eklutna, Alaska, in 1923. By Malmberg’s estimation, Mary lived to be about 85 years old. She was buried near Chitina, Alaska. She was the mother of 4 children who reached adulthood, but preceded her in death. “She was a favorite subject for paintings by both Jules Dalagher [Dahlager] and E. Ziegler.”- Quoted from a donation letter written by John Grainger February 6, 1979.
