Lutheran Church Mission Papers, Sitka, Alaska, 1840-1845
Scope and Contents
This collection includes photocopies of letters, diary entries, biographical data, publications, photographs, and other material concerning the Lutheran missionaries from Finland and others who were in Sitka in the 1840s, this includes a member of the Enckell family. The material provides an account of Russian America with major files on the missionary Uno Cygnaeus; Johan Bartram and Alexander Frankenhaeuser, naval officers in the Russian service; Russian American governor Arvid Adolf Etholen and his wife, Margreth; and Reinhold Ferdinand Sahlberg, a doctor with the Russian American Company. Historical
The original documents are with Jarl Enckell, resident of Helsingfors, Finland; who provided copies of manuscripts and related publications with some translation from Old Swedish by Dr. Joseph O. Rude and others.
File includes photocopies of typescript by Jarl Enckell for a book (or books?) he was writing concerning New Archangel at the time of Etholen’s governorship, and the founding of the Sitka Lutheran Church, with working title Sitka 1840-1845, sent to Isabel Miller, Sitka Historical Society, while in progress. Some copies are translations of text by Dr. Joseph O. Rude.
