Scope and Contents
The Kathleen Lopp Smith Family collection contains 53 black and white and color commercial postcards of Southeast Alaska, South central Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and the Yukon Territory. Four of the postcards look like private photos printed on postcard stock.

Biographical
Kathleen Lopp Smith was born October 14, 1933, in Seattle, to Dwight and Alice Lopp. Kathleen attended local schools. After earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, she taught in several Washington public schools. Kathleen married Verbeck Smith and they had two children, Neil and Kevin. Mrs. Smith passed away September 29, 2003.
Kathleen’s grandmother and grandfather, Ellen Louise Kittredge Lopp and William Thomas Lopp, were teachers in Alaska. Kathleen edited and annotated their letters and diaries and other family members collections for the book Ice Window: Letters From a Bering Strait Village, 1892-1902. Ice Window relates the experiences of Kathleen’s grandparents on Cape Prince of Wales.
The postcards in this collection may have been collected on a tour of Alaska, ca. 1930.

The collection was donated by Verbeck Smith, Kathleen Lopp Smith’s husband, in August 2004 to the Alaska State Library Historical Collections.
