Scope and Contents

Papers document Annahootz and Sitka Indian Police Force in the 1880s, Swineford’s trip on the Thetis, and his political interests after his Governorship. His daughter’s notes on her memory of the school in Sitka while her father was Governor.

Biographical

Albert P. Swineford: Born in Ashland, Ohio, September 14, 1936, Swineford served as governor of Alaska Territory 1885-1889. A journalist from Ohio and Michigan, he worked as a printer, editor, and publisher in the Midwest before and after his time as Governor. In 1901 he returned to Alaska as publisher of the Ketchikan MINING JOURNAL and the Ketchikan MINER. He held several mining interests in Alaska, was active in politics, and died in Juneau on October 29, 1909. --Who’s Who in Alaskan Politics

Mrs. Allen Shattuck (Agnes Swineford): Born in Cleveland, Ohio, October 23, 1879, she came to Alaska with her family in 1886. She married Allen Shattuck in 1900 and lived in Juneau until her husband’s death in 1960. She died in Rafael, California, on March 15, 1973. --Juneau Empire, 3/26/73

No original order. Grouped by type of material. These papers relate to the Swineford official papers found in the Alaska State Archives. A file of official correspondence of Governor Swineford (formerly numbered MS 34) was transferred to the Alaska State Archives in 1993.
