Scope and Contents

This album contains photographs he collected while stationed at the Ft. Davis Army Post from 1915-1919. The collection also includes 21 views taken by Lomen Bros. Images record the daily life of the soldiers at Fort Davis Army Post and people and community activities in Nome. Also includes the All Alaska Sweepstakes, gold mining, Alaskan towns, scenics and wildlife. 1913-1919.

Biographical

William Allen Moore was born in Abingdon, Virginia, Nov. 8, 1897, one of 14 children born to Thomas and Nancy Bailey Moore. In 1915 he joined the army and went to Fort Davis, Nome, Alaska where he spent four years as a private in D Co., 14th Infantry, and served as an orderly to Captain A.M. Martin, Commanding officer. During his stay, he became interested in photography, purchased a Kodak camera and established a small darkroom in a closet. He developed many pictures of Army life, Eskimos, primitive settlements, wildlife, ships and nature. He married Irene Putnam in 1927. In addition to photography, he was an avid horticulturist. He died in Wisconsin in April, 1986.

Acquisition

Through the efforts of Wayne Roberts, Mr. Moore's relative, Senator Jay Kerttula and his assistant, Richard Ramsey, Jr., and Mrs. Moore, the collection was donated to the Alaska Historical Library June 22, 1983, when Mr. Moore was 86 years old and living in Wisconsin. Acc. No. 1983-012.
