Biographical
Joseph Hewitt (1848-1923) was born in Indiana, and married his spouse, Mary, there in 1879. He moved to Ohio and Kansas City, Mo. He worked as an art glass maker in a business owned by a family member of his wife.
Joseph and Mary Hewitt went to Southeast Alaska in the fall of 1908 to visit their two daughters. Dorothy Hewitt was a government teacher in Hoonah and Helen Hewitt was teaching at Klawock. In the summer of 1909 Joseph, Mary, and Dorothy camped over 500 miles of Southeast Alaska, returning to Kansas City in the spring of 1910. In 1913 Joseph and Mary moved to Los Angeles, CA.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection was donated by Mary Stegeman, great granddaughter of Joseph Hewitt, and granddaughter of Helen Hewitt. The original manuscript was donated to the Alaska State Museum and transferred to the Alaska State Library Historical Collections August 9, 1989. The typewritten transcription of the manuscript was received by the Alaska State Library Historical Collections in October of 1989.
