Scope and Contents

PCA 473 and Related Materials. The collection is comprised of a publication: Southeast Alaska Salmon Fishery: A Guide to Interviews with Men and Women Engaged in Commercial Fishing, 1913-1978. Text by Stephen B. Levey; photos by George Figdor. Alaska State Library Historical Monograph No. 6, Alaska Department of Education, Juneau Alaska, 1979; Photograph and manuscript material accumulated in the course of writing and publishing Southeast Alaska Salmon Fishery; audio interviews (originally on audiocassette); six one half-hour radio programs (location unknown) and one half-hour audio visual program (originally on video tape) produced by KTOO FM and TV (Public Radio and Television), Juneau Alaska. The publication contains 54 interview summaries, selections of transcripts, and original print photographs of persons interviewed in 1978. Audio interviews and half-hour audio visual program are housed separately at the Historical Library (ASL Phonotapes C-44 and Video 039 –see catalog). The published version of these materials is entitled The Southeast Alaska Salmon Fishery: A guide to interviews with men and women engaged in commercial fishing 1913-1978 is available for circulation through the Juneau Library system and accessible at the Historical Collections in PCA473 and LC call# F901.A295 no. 6.

Biographical Note

Stephen Levey is a freelance writer and researcher with a PhD in English from the State University of New York. He has taught literature, writing, and cinema at various colleges, and has served as a consultant for citizen education on public policy and community affairs for humanities programs both in Alaska and Washington.

George Figdor is a photographer and writer living in Haines, Alaska. He has a Master’s Degree in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. His photos of Alaskan life have appeared in National Fisherman, Alaska Magazine, Alaskan Fisherman, and Southeastern Log. He is also the co-author of a children’s book on Salmon fishing.
