Alaska Division of Tourism Photograph Collection, ca. 1950-[ongoing]

 Collection
Identifier: PCA 22

Scope and Contents

This collection of photographs includes views taken from 1960-1975 by photographers in the Alaska Travel Division and used for tourism activity. The black and white photograph prints and negatives were placed in the library in 1976. The collection is arranged by subject groups as received from the Division. Among the photographs are views taken by Fred Belcher when he was state photographer. His photographs are included within the subject groups and a special collection attributed to him in volume 23B. (See also PCA 50.)

Later the State decided to contract with commercial photographers to take transparencies of Alaska for Alaska tourism promotion. When the Division removes non-current transparencies from their files, they are transferred to the library for historical purposes. Boxes 8 – 11 were transferred to the library in November of 1996. Boxes 12 – 28 were transferred in February 2006. At that time box numbers were assigned to the entire collection, including Boxes 1 – 11, which before that time had been identified by volume number only. In June of 2007, oversize negatives for Boxes 1-3 were renumbered (from A-1 to K-11 numbering system) to match print numbers. They were moved from file cabinet storage to boxes and moved to Series II, with the prints and slides becoming Series I. Minimal conservation at that time consisted of removing cellophane tape and wax adhesives. Duplicate prints found in negative sleeves were removed to print folders. Color negatives and miscellaneous prints in backlog were added to Box 10. Boxes 29 to Box 30 are unprocessed; Box 30 came from the House of Wickersham.

The subject listings for each volume reflect the views received from the Division at various times. Certain volumes, notably VOLUME 23B – Fred Belcher, Photographer, BOX 18 – Mark Noble, Photographer, and VOL. 11-23A, 35 MM Color Transperancies, have detailed inventories.

There is no exhaustive description of views so inquiries regarding the collection should specify exact subject needs for further information.
