Scope and Contents
Records of the Nowell Gold Mining Company, 1897-1910; there are 1762 items. Letterpress copy books from 1897-1899, the letters of Thomas A. Nowell, primarily, concern mines in the Silver Bow Basin near Juneau, Alaska. Also, the company properties in the Berners Bay area of Alaska. There is also some correspondence of sons Frank and Arthur and records of a 1910 court case concerning the Berners Bay Mining and Milling Company. Son Frank Nowell was a stockholder and handled company business from San Francisco, California. The letters reflect financial investments of stockholders, an agreement with the American Gold Mining Company, and difficulties experienced by that company. Many of the investors were from the East and Thomas Nowell conducted business from Boston, Massachusetts. The collection also includes an index to personal and business names found in the copy books.
