Scope and Contents

Generally the photographs in this collection are of coastal Southcentral and Southeast Alaska and appear to have been taken in 1961, either from the air or from the ground. There are some scenery views but most feature littoral zones, towns, infrastructure, and industry.

Specifically, the photographs show shore developments like docks, breakwaters, floats, and boats; shore structures like warehouses; shore activities like dredging (especially in Valdez); a few “town overviews” and air photographs show the relationship between communities and their harbors or other ocean access.

Some of the locales photographed include Anchorage, Old Town Valdez, Homer, Sitka, and Ouzinkie. Source of information: Letter dated October 1, 2007 from donor Dale V. Sellin.

Many of the photographic prints are stamped with instructions to credit the photos to the U.S. Army.

Milo Mujagic, owner of Carl’s Jewelers in Anchorage, discovered a box of black and white photographs accompanied by negatives.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated by Dale V. Sellin of Anchorage to the Alaska State Archives and transferred to the Alaska State Library Alaska Historical Collections. Acc. # 2009-52. The collection was found by Milo Mujagic, owner of Carl’s Jewelers in Anchorage.

Processing Information

This collection has been described at the folder level. Original order maintained. Photographs have been placed in Mylar and into an acid free folder. Notes of places and some dates on negative sleeves. Negatives were placed in archival sleeves then into an archival box and placed in freezer.
