Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

President and Mrs. Harding began their journey at Tacoma, Washington, aboard the U.S. Navy transport HENDERSON. They spent 15 days in the Territory of Alaska, visiting Metlakatla, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau, Skagway, Seward, Anchorage, Wasilla, Willow, Nenana, Fairbanks, Cordova, and Sitka. While in Alaska, President Harding drove the last golden spike in the newly built Alaska Railroad.

Photographs numbered 1-76 are affixed to the original album pages and are located in the PCA Oversized Collection. Additional views of President Harding's Alaska trip are in the portrait file. A small amount of memorabilia from the visit is included.

The Philip Scott Wilcox donation (Folders 3-5 and books) contains correspondence between Governor and Mrs. Bone and President and Mrs. Harding. It also contains photographs and papers kept by Marguerite Bone Wilcox, including her “A President Visits Alaska”.
